Getting the pneumonia vaccine is the best way to reduce your risk of getting sick with pneumonia. Pneumonia typically affects the lungs. Even though it’s common among kids, older adults who get pneumonia are at high risk for serious illness and death.
The number of shots you need depends on if and when you’ve previously gotten a pneumonia vaccine. (If you’re not sure, reach out to us and we’ll help you sort it out.)
You can get it any time of year.
The pneumonia vaccine is widely available (you don’t even need a prescription or provider’s order). Your best bet is to get it at a pharmacy near you.
Most people have no side effects. Some people experience a sore arm where the shot was given, feeling tired, feeling achy, and a headache. Any side effects are usually mild and temporary, especially when compared to symptoms of pneumonia.
