A Numbers Game with Diabetes
With so many aspects of diabetes being measured in numbers, it’s no wonder why managing it can get overwhelming. But if you know what numbers to keep an eye out for, it doesn’t have to.
Knowledge = power.
You may be wondering, "Why do I need to know my blood sugar numbers?" Long story short, they tell you how well-managed your diabetes is, which is essential. When your diabetes is under control, you have less chance of developing serious health concerns, like kidney disease and vision loss. Blood sugar testing also provides valuable insight for diabetes management, such as how diet, exercise, illness, and stress affect your numbers.
Think of this first number as a way to check in on your blood glucose. It reflects the average amount of glucose that has attached to the hemoglobin in your blood over the last three months.
Blood glucose levels
Meters are used to check blood glucose levels at any moment. Some are worn on the body while others require a finger prick. It’s good to check your blood glucose right after you wake up before doing anything else.
Carbohydrates are great for providing energy but too many can send your blood glucose levels way out of range. Checking your blood glucose levels is the best way to see how many carbs are best but in a pinch, you can always use this as a guide.
